As a longstanding educator, homeschooling mama, and children’s book author, Danna Zeiger strives to help make challenging topics accessible. Before pursuing her publishing dreams, she was Biology Professor and Program Director for Fisher College’s Biology Program, teaching and mentoring disadvantaged and first-in-the-family students from diverse backgrounds.
Danna's debut STEM nonfiction picture book, REWRITING THE RULES: How Dr. Kathleen Friel Created New Possibilities for Brain Research and Disability, (acquired by Carol Hinz at Millbrook Press) was released in September 2025 and received a School Library Journal starred review, was named Best of 2025 by the Chicago Public Library, Best of 2025 by School Library Journal, 2026 USBBY Outstanding Books for Young People with Disabilities List, 2026 Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC) Choices, was commended for the 2026 Pedro and Daniel Intersectionality Book Awards (PADIBA), won the Outstanding Science Trade Books for Students K–12 2026 by the National Science Teachers' Association, won the Silver Medal for The Cook Prize, and is nominated for the 2026 Chickadee Award.
Her next (to be announced) nonfiction STEM picture book is slated for fall 2027 publication. Her unpublished novel-in-verse was awarded the PJ Our Way Harold Grinspoon Award. She is also a 2024-2026 PJ Library Sephardic Stories Initiative diversity writing fellow and has won numerous additional awards, including several Highlights scholarships, and many writing contests. Danna is a regular contributor to the Writers’ Rumpus Blog.
